“Nesting Spot”
Design for patchwork quilt
For this quilt, I had a couple of design goals in mind. I wanted to echo the fabric collection’s name (Nest by Lella Boutique for Moda) in the design, so I created a shape that’s reminiscent of a nest full of eggs. I also wanted a layout that left plenty of open, airy space around the blocks to keep it feeling fresh and light.
I think one of the most interesting aspects of using repeated blocks is the way they can be brought together and then tweaked to create a pleasing whole that is greater than the sum of its parts, and this quilt is another exercise in that vein. I kept the piecing on the simpler side, but used the directional qualities of the fabrics, slight changes in the blocks and orientation to create the grander overall design.
