We Must Not Look at Goblin Men notecards
Folded notecards showing detail images from my 2009 work We Must Not Look at Goblin Men.
We must not look at goblin men,
We must not buy their fruits:
Who knows upon what soil they fed
Their hungry, thirsty roots?
We Must Not Look at Goblin Men is based on Christina Rossetti’s poem, Goblin Market, and portrays the sisters Lizzie and Laura collecting water from the river at dusk, and being wooed by a band of cheerful goblins with their tempting dishes of juicy, enticing fruit.
There are ten choices of notecard, one each of the five goblins, and five views of the girls. Or, choose from either of two packs: the five goblin cards or the five girl cards, and receive a free postcard of the whole piece.

- Furryface goblin
“One like a wombat prowled obtuse and furry” Meet Furryface, a jolly, benign sort of goblin who likes nothing better than a tickle behind the ears. You could almost imagine him as a cute pet round the house. What you can’t see here, of course, is that he has very sharp, pointed teeth… . Folded [...]

Folded notecard supplied [...]
- Catface goblin
“One had a cat’s face” You’ve heard the saying that thousands of years ago, cats were worshipped as gods – and that they’ve never forgotten it? Well, Catface is as close to a goblin god as there is. - Leader goblin
“One tramped at a rat’s pace” This goblin troop’s Leader is one tough goblin. He’s been around a few hundred years and has seen it all before, including any number of innocent and foolish girls. He may be small but don’t for a minute think he isn’t strong. Yes, he does have a name, but [...]
- Laura & Lizzie
“Evening by evening Among the brookside rushes, Laura bowed her head to hear, Lizzie veiled her blushes:” Here are the two girls together, reacting in their differing ways to the siren song of the goblins: “Come buy our orchard fruits, Come buy, come buy:” Folded notecard supplied with white envelope. Blank inside.
- Laura (vertical)
“Laura reared her glossy head And whispered like the restless brook: ‘Look, Lizzie, look, Lizzie, Down the glen tramp little men. One hauls a basket, One bears a plate, One lugs a golden dish Of many pounds weight.” This is curious Laura who just can’t resist the temptation of that luscious fruit the goblins are [...]
- Lizzie (vertical)
“‘Oh,’ cried Lizzie, ‘Laura, Laura, You should not peep at goblin men.’ … ‘No,’ said Lizzie, ‘No, no, no; Their offers should not charm us, Their evil gifts would harm us.’” Lizzie may seem the timid and unadventurous one, but Laura will later be glad of her sister’s courage and fortitude. Folded notecard supplied with [...]
